General Admission Requirements
Prospective students who wish to enter the ND degree program must complete and/or satisfy the following general admission requirements:
- ApplicationThe application is considered incomplete without your legal signature. After you submit your application, you will be asked to sign the application agreement statement and mail it to Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine & Health Sciences.
- Nonrefundable application fee of $65 ($90 international applicants, $40 transfer students, $50 reapplicants)
- Three
letters of recommendation mailed directly from reference
- one academic (may use continuing education)
- one occupational
- one health care/personal
- If reapplicant, you are required to submit one academic or professional letter with form
- Official transcripts from each postsecondary institution attended (with a minimum GPA of 2.5)
- Personal interview. Interviews cover the candidate's academic, professional, and personal record, and are conducted by the Director of the Naturopathic Medical Program, Director of Student Services, a basic science faculty member, and a current SCNM student.
- A current photo and resume is requested
In addition, international applicants must also satisfy additional requirements:
- International Applicant Information
- International transcript evaluation/translation by professional International Transcript Service (for all foreign coursework)
- Satisfy visa application requirements by completing a financial guarantee form and proving adequate resources to cover anticipated cost of study
- Southwest College reserves the right to require international applicants whose first language is not English to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and score a minimum of 213
Admission Prerequisites
- Completed a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent) prior to matriculation. Total post-secondary course work must meet a minimum GPA of 2.5 and be completed at a regionally accredited or candidate college or university on the list entitled, "Accredited Institutions of Post-Secondary Education," authorized and published by the American Council on Education, One Dupont Circle, N.W. Washington D.C. 0036
- Completed the following academic prerequisite course work with a minimum GPA of 3.0 at a regionally accredited or candidate college or university prior to matriculation into the N.D. program.(Applicants with science courses older than 7 years must demonstrate competency in the discipline(s) in question to the Admissions Office and will be evaluated on a case by case basis).
Prerequisite coursework:
- 12 semester credits in biology with lab (course must be for science majors)
- 8 semester credits in chemistry with lab (course must be for science majors)
- 4 semester credits in organic chemistry with lab
- 6 semester credits in psychology (developmental psychology is recommended)
- 6 semester credits in English (3 credits must be in English composition)
- 6 semester credits in humanities (philosophy, religious studies, fine arts, history, foreign languages, women's studies, performing arts)
- One college level course in Physics is required for candidates applying for Admission for Fall 2004 or admission thereafter. Course must be algebra based, lab is optional. It is highly recommended that course content include mechanics, vectors, electricity, thermal physics, and fluid statics and dynamics.
The above list indicates minimum requirements but it should not be inferred that admission is probable for any applicant who meets them.
Additional recommended work for applicants considering the ND program
- Includes biochemistry and medical terminology
- Additional recommended coursework: developmental psychology, nutrition, genetics, biomedical ethics, computer skills, college algebra, counseling, botany, statistics, psychology of child, philosophy of science, anatomy, physiology.
